Beadlers
Beadlers are a developmental tool to enhance and encourage visualisation, visual processing, mathematics and learning strategies. Each Beadler comes with an instructional booklet that contains information about how and why the Beadlers work.
Beadlers were developed by Rachel Fisher as a tool to show teachers and parents what life is like for students with visual problems and with other learning difficulties.
Beadlers are used by the student with the teacher or parent to begin with. I like to begin using a beadler by asking the student what they see. This response tells me a lot about the student's visualization and observation skills. A student may see the colour of the material, pattern of the material, a particular bead on the material, a design on the material there are so many things that can be seen. Then I might ask the student to count all the blue beads.
Some students might not respond to this and this is usually because they are unsure about how to complete the task. So I would then say, "Hm can you put your finger on a blue bead"? Then we might discuss the different ways we could go about counting all the blue beads. They might count by touching each bead with their finger and saying the number out loud. They might fold the beadler in half and count one half and then the other half. There are so many ways to begin!
The beadlers offer so many different ways to learn. Some beadlers are focused on an age group, or a visualisation skill, math skill, or learning strategy skill. While some beadler's are more focused on a specific skill they all include many skills.
The beauty of this tool is that students learn skills that transfer into important areas of school work. A student who knows some learning strategies is more likely to attempt something than to sit and stare at their page.
